Early experiences of loss and their processing. Many people often spend years in therapy to free themselves from their fears of loss, inexplicable feelings of guilt, panic in confined spaces, or other unpleasant emotions. The actual background of their problems is sometimes only revealed during such therapy: the affected individuals were separated from a twin sibling that was lost while still in the womb. Since then, they have suffered—mostly unconsciously—from the effects of this prenatal separation. Evelyne Steinemann presents this little-known and underestimated phenomenon with examples from therapeutic practice: far more twins die unnoticed before birth than are actually born. The case studies illustrate how this trauma of loss can shape lives and how it can be overcome.
