During a stay in London, Commissioner Adamsberg makes a gruesome discovery: Shoes are lined up at the entrance of Highgate Cemetery, in which there are feet, but not the corresponding people. Glad that the case does not fall under his jurisdiction, he travels back to Paris. However, hardly has he arrived when he is confronted with a new cold-blooded crime involving a mutilated court reporter. Shortly thereafter, a report of an almost identical incident in Vienna follows. Adamsberg, suspecting a connection between the murders, plunges into the investigations that lead him to the traces of an ancient legend.
