Der Schlaf der Gerechten

A man walks to the mailbox and finds himself reminiscing about his daily commute to work in the eerie power plant of a factory. Another discovers a remote island in a lake, where nature unfolds a wild, magical regime, and once again enters the wilderness of a post-war childhood. A third returns to his hometown and feels pursued – not only by the town but also by himself, from which he cannot escape.

Wolfgang Hilbig's characters follow a blurred trail into the unconscious and the past, weaving through dark landscapes of memory. This suggestive and musical prose leads the reader into the unexplored depths of the 1950s and 1960s.
