A traveler catches sight of a ghostly shadow during his nighttime ride along the stormy coast of North Frisia, plunging into the waves of the North Sea with his horse. The traveler stops at an inn and learns the story of the restless rider, the White Horseman: Hauke Haien rises from a simple laborer to an influential dyke master. With the construction of a state-of-the-art dyke, he pursues a visionary goal, which, however, meets with the villagers' misunderstanding and inevitably leads to a tragic end. Storm's last completed novella tells the fate of an outsider, his struggle against superstition, human stubbornness, and the untamed power of the sea. It includes a concise biography of the author.
