After the first year of war failed to bring down the Soviet Union in a swift campaign, Hitler initially ordered the securing of military fuel supplies for 1942. Consequently, the focus of the attacks was placed on the southeast, with the aim of bringing the oil fields of the Caucasus under German control. In massive offensives, the Wehrmacht achieved enormous territorial gains. In contrast, the front lines in the central and northern sections remained relatively stable.
