The Austrian sociologist and political scientist Ludwig Gumplowicz (1838 - 1909) is one of the founding fathers of European sociology. He is primarily regarded as an early representative of conflict sociology. After studying law and economics at the universities of Krakow and Vienna, Gumplowicz initially worked as a lawyer. Following his move to Graz and his habilitation in 1876, he embarked on an academic career. For over thirty years, he researched and taught as a professor of constitutional law in Graz. In 1885, his main work 'Outline of Sociology' was published. Gumplowicz was influenced by Comte, Darwin, and Spencer and was considered a social Darwinist in his time.
