Graubünden, 1952: On a quiet autumn night, the servant Toni hears a piercing scream and soon makes a disturbing discovery. In the dark Rhine forest outside the gates of Chur sits a beautiful young woman, leaning against a tree. She wears a white dress and holds a bouquet of autumn crocus in her hands. She looks like a doll, her smile enchanting. But the young lady is dead. Then Toni hears a second scream. There's no doubt: Landjäger Walter Caminada is needed here, the best man in the Graubünden Landjäger corps with his infallible criminal instincts. Together with his friend, identification officer Peter Marugg, the Landjäger begins the investigation. But for a long time, the two men stumble in the dark. Is there a single perpetrator, or are there several? What connects the dead? The secret that the two investigators eventually uncover is an old, anxiously guarded one: it all began over thirty years ago, on a small alpine pasture high in the Bündner mountains.
