Samuel Berkow, the hero of David Unger's novel "The Price of Rescue," leaves Hamburg at the urging of his uncle and goes to Guatemala, where his cousin helps him settle into his new home. At thirty-eight years old, Samuel is young enough to take a fresh start. Overconfident and somewhat naive, he stumbles unprepared into a completely new world. Through the dangerous conditions in Puerto Barrios, the young, sensitive man quickly finds himself in a struggle between resignation and resilience. Unger illustrates Samuel's growing disorientation with scenarios and encounters that in some ways resemble Kafkaesque labyrinthine struggles. The fundamental question that looms over the novel is: What is the price of escape?.
