Wladyslaw Szpilman, born 1911, studied music in Berlin. In 1933 he returned to Warsaw, where he immediately gained recognition as a pianist and composer. Miraculously escaping the concentration camp, he served as head of the music department of the Polish Radio from 1945 to 1963. At the age of 88 he died in Warsaw in 2000.

Poland 1940: The pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman lives in the Warsaw Ghetto. Two years later he is standing at the "reloading point" together with his family and siblings for transport to an extermination camp. After a spectacular escape, he remains alone in the deserted ruined city - in constantly changing hiding places, always in mortal fear. One day a Wehrmacht officer discovers him - and does not kill him. On the contrary, he helps Szpilman survive...
