The present volume attempts to link early error research with current orthography-systematic findings and to illuminate some procedures for the diagnosis of spelling performance against this background, but also under the aspects of special conditioning factors of writing language acquisition. It would be desirable if in future research on written language and especially on orthographic acquisition, errors were understood as elements of the phenomenon level: Errors as clues and aids with which, in an overall view, the system of internal rules underlying the spelling competence of a given learner at a given time can be reconstructed.
