Chief Inspector Jakob Franck has been retired for two months and now believes he can begin a life beyond the dead. Twenty years ago, he spent seven hours, without saying a word, helping the mother of a dead seventeen-year-old girl. Now the commissioner is caught up in this constellation: Ludwig Winther contacts him; he is the father of the young girl who is said to have committed suicide, and husband of the woman to whom Franck paid so much attention. Twenty years have passed, and Ludwig Winther still does not believe that his daughter has committed suicide. He is convinced that she was murdered. Ex-commissioner Jakob Franck therefore sets about clarifying the circumstances of her death, "bringing a dead case back to life". In doing so, Jakob Franck follows his very own method, the "sensibility of thought": it is inimitable and unpractical.
