Product details

The Myth of the Process of Civilisation" consists of four volumes. In this third volume, Hans Peter Duerr primarily opposes the assertion that the early modern period produced a type of personality that, in contrast to today's, was ready for a "more unrestrained satiation of lust for women or even of hatred in the destruction and torment of everything that is an enemy" (Norbert Elias). in the destruction and torment of all that is enemy" (Norbert Elias), whereas we today, even as warriors or criminals, are normally constrained and tamed by more comprehensive internalised rules and prohibitions. In contrast, Hans Peter Duerr attempts to prove that the widely accepted and prevailing theory of civilisation is merely based on the ideal of a pacified and instinct-controlled type of human being, an image that is belied by the real and symbolic violence that prevails in Western societies in the 20th century, both in times of peace and war.
