Although she has turned down every marriage proposal so far, everyone calls her Mrs. Susanna. Because the man she loves is already married, she lives alone in the glamorous Vienna of the turn of the century. At the picturesque Madensky Square, she runs a successful fashion salon. Ideas for her wonderful dresses come to Susanna as soon as she closes her eyes. She knows the people in the square like the back of her hand: the old antique dealer Haller, who gets annoyed when someone wants to buy a book he hasn't finished reading yet; Mr. Starsky, a professor of reptile diseases, who is currently researching the effects of spinach on turtle growth; and the mustached Rip, who brings his owner the newspaper every morning promptly at seven. Life in the square is accompanied by the tireless piano playing of the mysterious stranger who has moved into the attic across the street. Yet, despite having found a home and a family here, a great longing weighs on her sunny disposition.
