Allen Williams is on a ship from New York to Liverpool when it suffers shipwreck near a lighthouse. Benjamin Postlethwaite, the lighthouse keeper, rescues the passengers from the icy sea. As Allen leaves the island, Benjamin gifts him a hand-drawn picture of a ship. Even years later, Allen cannot forget the picture and the old lighthouse keeper. He writes letters to Benjamin but never receives a reply. Eventually, Allen decides to visit Benjamin.
