The Boy Who Escaped Death Fourteen Times
It is nothing short of a miracle that he was able to celebrate his 90th birthday: Sam Pivnik had to fear for his life even as a teenager.
At the age of 13, Sam, who was then still called Szlamek, witnesses the Nazis invading Poland. In the following years, he not only survives the horrors of the Upper Silesian ghetto. He also survives the extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, where a mere gesture can decide between life in the concentration camp or death in the gas chamber. He escapes selection by Josef Mengele, survives a typhus infection, and endures the death march to the German coast. When the Cap Arcona sinks in the Bay of Lübeck, he manages to be one of the few who reach land. Countless times, Sam narrowly escapes death - through luck, physical strength, and an unshakable will to survive.
From the Holocaust and a Life Afterward
For Sam Pivnik, World War II meant six years during which the world stood still. It was only at the end of his incredible life that one of the last survivors of Auschwitz was able to speak about it. In his autobiography, he gives the victims of the extermination of the Jews their faces and stories back and describes the atrocities of that time without holding back.
- The incredible biography of a Holocaust survivor
- Told by one of the last eyewitnesses of Auschwitz and the Cap Arcona
- Featuring 45 photos and illustrations from then and now
Sam's vividly recounted memories provide historical insights and serve as a plea for justice and humanity in every generation.
