Is the Koran a message to the heathens of the Arabian Peninsula that has led to the founding of a new religion within only 22 years? Is it the sacred scripture canonized shortly after the death of its proclaimer, which is nevertheless authentically preserved for us? In view of the unprecedented success of the Qur'an, it is no wonder that this account is repeatedly questioned and hypotheses are formulated that paraphrase early Islamic history and let the Qur'an emerge in another region, at another time and even without the participation of Muhammad. All previous reconstructions, however, are incompatible with each other and do not produce a plausible picture of the events, but only raise countless new problems. The question must be different: Is the Koran really a purely Islamic text and thus foreign to the Western reader? Or is it not rather one.
