The translation of legal texts is gaining increasing interest and relevance against the backdrop of the advancing process of globalization. This work aims to provide an overview of the field of activity and working methods of the legal translator. It addresses the specific qualifications, tools, and the role of the translator, as well as the text-specific challenges that need to be overcome in legal text translation. Since expertise in the legal systems of both the source and target language cultures is essential for understanding the text, the author conducts a legal comparison in the second part of the work using the example of divorce law in Germany and France to highlight similarities and differences. Selected examples will illustrate the relevance of such a legal comparison. This work is intended to serve as a guide for aspiring and interested translators and to make the role of the legal translator more comprehensible. At the same time, it provides an introduction to German and French divorce law.
