While the number of Christians is increasing in the Southern Hemisphere, churches in the North are losing members by the hundreds of thousands. Norbert Reck believes that the causes run deeper than various reform attempts can address. Since the Enlightenment, there has been a deep rift between church doctrine (dogma) and critical engagement with the Bible (exegesis), which has led to a profound loss of credibility for Christianity. Both liberal biblical criticism and dogmatic antimodernism have either rendered Jesus' Jewish identity invisible or praised him as a conqueror of Judaism.
