Product details

At night, the Spaniard Pedro Garcia Alvarez makes the acquaintance of Asmoday. The limping devil flies with him over the rooftops of Berlin and lets him experience the fate of the Jewish merchant Jaro Grünspan. "The Limping Devil in Berlin" was published in 1937 in the Yugoslavian-Jewish cultural magazine "Omanut". After arriving in Eretz Israel in March 1945, Hinko Gottlieb translated this and other of his works into German. This volume brings together seven selected writings written and translated by the Croatian-Jewish author between 1936 and 1948: The Limping Devil in Berlin, The Residence Permit, Morenu Meschulam, An Animal Story, The Doll Channa, The Burnt Forest and Kaddish in the Forest. In these texts, Gottlieb deals with the Jewish experience of marginalisation, persecution, betrayal and murder. At the centre, however, is the question of the individual, of his or her idea of justice, resistance and self-determination.
