Sezuan, sometime in the 20th century: Three gods arrive in a slum in the Chinese province and believe they have finally found what they are looking for on Earth in the prostitute Shen Te: a good person. They give her money, but her unconditional compassion quickly drives Shen Te back into financial hardship. In the capitalist society of Sezuan, those who want to survive must exploit others, and thus the beleaguered Shen Te is ultimately forced to create an alter ego: the unscrupulous tobacco manufacturer Shui Ta.
