"The Good Person of Szechwan" was written in exile between 1938 and 1940 and premiered on February 4, 1943, in Zurich. The play, a parable, illustrates through the individual case of the girl Shen Te the general law of this world that it is impossible to "be good and still live." Three gods wander the world in search of a good person. They want to disprove the rumor that the economic conditions on Earth are so unbearable that people are unable to follow the commandments of the gods.
