On that fateful May 10, 1996, when five people died in the death zone on Mount Everest, he participated as a guide in Scott Fischer's expedition and fought his way through the whipping wind several times to save expedition members from certain death.

38-year-old Russian professional mountaineer and mountain guide Anatoly Boukreev climbed eleven of the world's fourteen eight-thousanders without oxygen equipment and was considered one of the best climbers in the world. He stood on the summit of Mount Everest a total of four times. For his rescue actions on May 10, 1996, he received the David Sowles Award from the American Alpine Club. In December 1997, he was killed by an avalanche while climbing Annapurna (8091 meters).
