Product details

For the first time, a history of Oldenburg's Gertrudenkirchhof is available. From the Middle Ages to the present, people were buried here. However, the significance of the churchyard has changed constantly during this time. From a cemetery for lepers outside the city walls, the churchyard became a ducal burial ground and today an inner-city refuge for people and animals. The Gertrude Churchyard is a place of remembrance for the individual people who were buried there, but also for the city's history, which has found expression here over the centuries. The book tells the story of the cemetery and explains the different stylistic periods of the grave monuments that can still be seen today. Pictures by the Oldenburg photographer Ennow Strelow show the beauty of the Gertrudenkirchhof in all seasons. Dr. Ralph Hennings (born 1963) is pastor at the St. Lamberti Church in Oldenburg and private lecturer in church history at the University of Oldenburg.
