Rebecca Brandt has decided to end her life. However, an unexpected visitor prevents her from going through with her plan. An old friend visits her at her home in southern France and brings along two stranded students, Inga and Marius, who were trying to hitchhike to the sea. Rebecca likes the two of them and lends them her boat. But during the sailing trip, a terrible argument breaks out. Marius falls overboard and disappears. Weeks later, his picture appears in the newspaper. He is being sought in connection with a horrific crime in Germany.
