Product details

Enid Blyton was born on August 11, 1897, in East Dulwich, South London. Initially, Enid Blyton wanted to study music, but she suddenly decided to become a kindergarten teacher. This profession suited her love for children and her passion for storytelling. Her first children's book was published in 1922. Many of her texts were published in magazines, newspapers, and other books in the following years. With her first husband, Enid Blyton had two daughters, Gillian and Imogen. In her second marriage, she married the well-known surgeon Kenneth Darrell Waters. The two later founded the company Darrell Waters Limited for optimal marketing of her works and merchandising. The author placed great importance on the design of her books. She personally selected the artists for the illustrations. She also had the idea to print images on the back of her books, which made booksellers eager to display them in their shop windows. Her own signature on her books was another of her ideas. In the 1950s, Blyton's works gained international recognition through licensed editions. During her lifetime, she was one of the most popular and well-known English authors. Her influence on post-war children's literature was significant. Enid Blyton loved children all over the world and wrote about 700 books and several thousand short stories, songs, poems, and plays for them. Her works reached millions in sales and were translated into more than 40 languages. The author summarized her successes in many countries in a letter to Erika Klopp, her then German publisher, saying: "It is strange that, regardless of which foreign countries the books appear in, they soon become generally popular, even though they are entirely British in character. I conclude that children are essentially the same everywhere." Enid Blyton passed away in 1968 at the age of 71.
