In the development policy environment and in the public eye, the Swiss Red Cross (SRC) was hardly noticed, yet it began providing technical assistance abroad in the 1950s and 60s. The missions primarily focused on the health sector and presented various challenges in foreign contexts. How was the technical assistance structured, who was it aimed at, and what experiences did the delegates have in different missions? How was the SRC internally organized, and which external actors influenced the design of the missions? Author Risch Tratschin systematically examines the technical assistance missions of the SRC in nine countries between 1954 and 1973. Based on extensive source analysis, a detailed picture emerges of the planning and execution of the missions, as well as the external influences and structural obligations that shaped the SRC's work abroad during that time.
