Der Feldhamster

The European field hamster shares the fate of many wild animals in our cultural landscape. Once widespread and even fought as a plague, it is now on the verge of extinction. The rodent is a classic cultural follower, which found its way well in the field over centuries. Besides farmers and hamster catchers, science has also dealt with it again and again. The two authors show how much the attitude towards an animal species can change, which has played a role in the history of agriculture for almost 2000 years. In this book, the knowledge that has accumulated since the publication of the first NBB monograph in 1952 is brought up to date and expanded by numerous aspects of species and nature conservation. This interesting development and its consequences for animals, humans and the environment are discussed in detail in addition to the extra-curricular activities.
