Product details
This adventure novel is one of the most interesting and thrilling depictions of the wild squatter life in the far West. From the book: "We had exchanged our opinions, and as far as we were concerned, also our plans and prospects, without noticing that the old man had become taciturn and finally completely silent. He had taken his rifle in hand, hammering harder and harder on its flint; as I later learned, this is an unmistakable sign of growing distrust among backwoodsmen. The others whispered and murmured to each other, pulling their legs further away from us. We finally noticed these movements - we fell silent as well. A pause of several minutes ensued..." Charles Sealsfield, whose real name was Carl Anton Postl (1793-1864), was an Austrian and American writer. His favored regions were the Southern States of America, Texas, Louisiana, the rocky deserts of the Rockies, and the paradise of Mexico. His novels about the New World ("The Legitimate and the Republicans," "Transatlantic Travel Sketches," "The Virey and the Aristocrats" - a historical novel about the Mexican War of Independence...) established a significant literary reputation.
