Derby, Maine, 1942: The women of the local book club couldn't be more different. There's Louise, who has inherited a private library from her father but doesn't really know what to do with books. Avis, who is more interested in magazines because she finds practical tips for her young marriage in them. Ginny, who only comes for the delicious cookies, and her coworker Martina, who seeks distraction from her dreary life as a factory worker with her two children. At first, none of them can imagine that they will not only discover the fascination of reading but could even become friends. Yet, the library becomes a refuge for each of them, where they can reveal their dark secrets, their wounds, and hidden desires.
