The emotive word "bonus" occupies a broad public and is the subject of numerous labour law conflicts. The present Basel dissertation categorizes for the first time the types of bonus common in practice in the context of employment contract law and analyzes their different legal consequences. In addition to the permissible scope and effectiveness of voluntary and discretionary provisions, it explains when a bonus is owed in the event of being prevented from working and under what conditions it may be reduced. Taking into account the extensive court practice, it is analysed to what extent a termination has consequences for bonus claims and to what extent contractual forfeiture and retransfer clauses are permissible. Furthermore, it is explained what has to be considered when introducing a bonus program and which transparency claims are available to employees entitled to a bonus.
