Product details

Among the genres of ancient literature, there has been a notable resurgence of interest in the Greco-Roman novel after years of neglect. The conference organized by the two signatories at the Centro Stefano Franscini from March 27 to 31, 1995, aimed to address this newly awakened interest in two ways: On one hand, we wanted to provide a forum to discuss often controversial research perspectives, potentially opening new avenues for accessing the narrative texts of antiquity. On the other hand, the diverse relationships between ancient and medieval narrative forms were to be illuminated through interdisciplinary collaboration among classical philologists, Byzantinists, medievalists, and Romance scholars. The contributions published in this volume, which are revised versions of the lectures given at Monte Verità, hopefully demonstrate the highly productive and stimulating collaboration of the various literary disciplines involved in the conference. At this point, we would like to express our gratitude: We thank the Centro Stefano Franscini and ETH Zurich for their hospitality during our stay at Monte Verità and for their extremely generous financial support, without which the conference could never have taken place. Ms. Katia Bastianelli made the smooth running of the conference possible through her tireless efforts. The Zurich team members, Tatiana Crivelli and Johannes Bartuschat, selflessly contributed both in the lead-up to the conference and in the editorial work on this conference volume.
