This book deals with the significance of the real Other in psychoanalysis. Originally conceived by Freud as an external observer and object of drive satisfaction, its position in psychoanalysis has fundamentally changed over the course of more than 125 years. Although not all analysts support this change, it has already had a lasting impact on most currents of psychoanalysis. The focus is on intersubjectivity. In this context, the Other is now viewed not only as an indispensable promoter of development but also as an active participant and co-creator in psychoanalytic treatment. This leads to significant changes in fundamental therapeutic concepts and strategies, which substantially alter the style and atmosphere of psychoanalytic treatments—moving towards a psychotherapy of equals.
