As with the work on the first editions of the book, this revision has reinforced our belief that the careful, loving treatment of old houses is the best school for architects. If we look, feel, and listen properly, we can experience, learn, and absorb much that master builders, artists, and craftsmen mastered in the past, and we rediscover much that has been buried: the effect of form and space, detail, differentiated color, clean connections between materials and components, building biology suggestions, fitting into the environment, economical use of local building materials, and above all, a sense of what we often lack today - diversity that fits in.
