In the summer of 1950, Hannah Arendt began to write notes by hand in a book that she called her "Thinking Diary." In fact, the 28 fully preserved notebooks have little in common with a conventional diary. Instead, they contain thought experiments and results of thinking, serving the author's lifelong goal of intellectually grappling with the reality of the century of wars, revolutions, and totalitarian systems. Readers directly experience Arendt's method of questioning the philosophical and political tradition of the West from Plato to Heidegger.
