The First World War was followed by a fundamental political upheaval in Central Europe. Albert Dikovich comprehensively analyses the consequences of this democratic turning point for German-speaking philosophy. On the one hand, he examines how the boundaries of the morally legitimate means of political conflict resolution were redrawn after the catastrophic violence of the war and in view of the acute escalation at home. Secondly, the connection between legal and epistemological assumptions and positionings within a field of tension between competing concepts of political reorganisation is examined. It becomes apparent that the philosophical battles for democracy waged at that time have more to do with our present than the historical distance would suggest.
