"Garder le Mort – Guarding the Dead": This book, presented here for the first time in German, by the French poet Jean-Louis Giovannoni, stands as a kind of secret icon in contemporary French poetry. Since its first publication over 40 years ago, it has been repeatedly reissued and discussed. It is a tough book. A book about death, whose humorless materialistic power over life has been brought to the forefront once again by the pandemic. A quiet violence can be felt in the more than sixty poems, some only two lines long. Initially, they revolve, in fragmentary words and sentence fragments, around the premonition that befalls us all when death creeps near. Then, in Giovannoni's poems, it soon becomes very physical: the repulsiveness of the dead body, thoughts during the washing of the deceased, while preparing the corpse – and then the continued existence of the dead in the conversations of the living: words do not decay. The book is not comforting in any cozy sense. It is existential. For the author, because the death of his mother prompted the writing. For the reader, because the poems repeatedly enact the crushing realization that life can only be had with the certainty of the leveling death. When experts of the human soul say that the only way to process the fear of death lies in confronting the body of a dead person, then the grim vigil that Jean-Louis Giovannoni imposes on us with Garder le mort is a good, a brave therapy.
