Cognitive impairments such as dementia and age-related confusion are among the most common conditions in old age. There are many books about dementia, but the book by British psychogerontologist Tom Kitwood has been enthusiastically received worldwide due to its radically different person-centered approach. Combined with the method of Dementia Care Mapping, this has led to the most significant treatment approach in the care and support of people with dementia. The person-centered approach played a crucial role in the development of the new DNQP expert standard "Relationship Building in the Care of People with Dementia." The 9th edition has been newly translated, designed, and illustrated. The interviews, afterwords, literature, texts, and glossary in the appendix have been revised. International dementia experts contributed new detailed comments on each chapter and current developments. Over 20 years after the publication of Kitwood's classic text, they are rethinking the questions of what it means to be a person, how the concept of dementia has changed, how a personality can be undermined and preserved, how people experience dementia, how the care of people with dementia can be improved, what new demands are placed on caregivers, how caregiving institutions can become more compassionate, and how the culture within an institution can be transformed for the benefit and well-being of people with dementia and those accompanying them.
