Delta - Iota

The extensive geographical lexicon, written around 530 AD, lists approximately 3,600 names of places, mountains, bodies of water, and peoples from the ancient world. Special attention is given to the etymology of names as well as the grammatical derivation of ethnic terms. For the cultural-historical information, often Stephanos is the sole authority, with citations from the authors provided. The new critical edition replaces the outdated version by A. Meineke (1849). An apparatus of parallels is included with the text of the directly transmitted epitome, which accounts for the sources of the lexicon and its later users. The first translation of the ethnic terms into a modern language and the annotations, particularly regarding language, onomastics, and topography, make the work accessible to a wide range of scholars in classical studies.
