Product details

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Englishman Thomas Young and the Frenchman Jean-François Champollion compete to be the first to solve the mystery of the hieroglyphs of Ancient Egypt. Jean-François Champollion ultimately succeeds in September 1822.

The Rosetta Stone was discovered in 1799 in a pile of rubble. In Ancient Egypt, it was inscribed with texts: it carries the same message in three different languages – Greek, Demotic, a language spoken in Egypt in the 7th century BC, and a pictorial script, the hieroglyphs. Thomas Young and Jean-François Champollion both aimed to win the race to decipher the hieroglyphs. One was English, the other French, at a time when England and France were adversaries and the two great superpowers of the world.

Dolnick's book tells the story of this intellectual rivalry, where glory awaits the victor for themselves and their nation. It is a captivating portrait of ancient and modern empires and a fascinating tale of missteps and discoveries.

A scientific thriller for readers of Andrea Wulf, titles on Ancient Egypt, and the history of science.
