Product details
England in July of the year 1271. The Jewish woman Deborah, niece of the physician Aron ben Gideon, discovers an infant's corpse in front of her house early in the morning. She manages to make the body disappear, but it is an ominous sign for the Jewish community of London. Someone is trying to bring disaster upon them. Attacks on the community follow, leaders are imprisoned in the Tower, and a messenger is murdered. At the same time, disaster strikes the knight Sir Leonard de Beuel. He is blamed for the murder of an estate manager. Deborah sets out to help uncover the connections and thus solve the crimes. The thrilling plot unfolds against the backdrop of historical events. The Norman king William the Conqueror had invited the Jews to England in 1066. However, under Henry III, their promising beginnings were called into question. In 1144, the first report of a 'blood libel' emerged in Norwich, England, where Jews were accused of murdering a twelve-year-old Christian. The charges were dropped due to lack of evidence, but later served as a model for similar accusations throughout Europe. The situation for Jewish communities in England worsened until under Henry's son Edward I, who participated in the Crusade from 1270-1272 as crown prince, the Jews were expelled from England in 1290. It was not until Cromwell's time, 300 years later, that Jews were allowed to return to England.
