Product details

Since the 1950s, there has been controversy over the significance of Nietzsche's posthumous writings for his philosophy and the perception of his philosophical image. While some, particularly Karl Schlechta, who reissued Nietzsche's works, argued that there is nothing in the posthumous writings that is not also found in the published works, Karl Löwith and Martin Heidegger contended: "What Nietzsche published during his lifetime is always in the foreground. The actual philosophy remains as a legacy" (Heidegger). From today's perspective, both positions are untenable. The new manuscript-faithful edition of the posthumous writings in diplomatic transcription now allows for a methodical resolution of this question. The internationally renowned Nietzsche scholar Werner Stegmaier, who has co-edited the Nietzsche Studies and the series Monographs and Texts on Nietzsche Research for decades, presents a fundamental study on the new text-based or contextual, differential, and chronological interpretation of Nietzsche. This allows us to observe the thinker at work, in his experimental philosophical orientation process. From this, his famous teachings on the Übermensch, the will to power, the eternal recurrence, and the masters of the earth in Thus Spoke Zarathustra are also understood in a new light.
