Product details

The luminous lead and concrete stained glass works of the St. Gallen studio Stäubli create modern glass art in the construction of restaurants, residential houses, corporate headquarters, garages, churches, and schools in Eastern Switzerland. This results in multifaceted connections between architecture-bound stained glass, graphics, tapestry, grave art, and mural painting, which characterize the versatile work of the stained glass artist Heinrich Stäubli (1926–2016). For the first time, the works and estate are art-historically acknowledged under the aspects of glass art in architecture and intermediality. The richly illustrated study provides a systematic classification of the Stäubli studio within the history of modern stained glass in the German-speaking world. It makes an important contribution to understanding the artist's studio and its working methods, and sheds light on the artistic and societal significance of stained glass in the second half of the 20th century. Additionally, four guided walks marked with maps to Stäubli locations offer the opportunity to trace the glass art in architecture in the St. Gallen area.
