During a creative phase lasting over five decades, Carl Röse dealt with questions of dental morphology, cariology, nutrition, and racial studies. The connecting element between the seemingly heterogeneous components of his overall work is the influence of contemporary biological thought on a distinctive personality with the narrow intellectual horizon of a petty bourgeois. The classification of Röse's work within its context in this study also sheds light on the ambivalence of the life reform movement and the medical research and practice it intended.
