The author Ferdinand Freiherr von Reitzenstein (1876-1929) was a German sexologist and worked at the Berlin Ethnological Museum and the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden. From 1923 he headed the anthropological-ethnological collection of the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin, founded by Magnus Hirschfeld. He was editor of the journal Geschlecht und Gesellschaft. In the present volume he describes the woman among primitive peoples in anthropological terms, her sexual characteristics and her beauty. Further, the development to maturity, sexual maturity, jewelry and clothing, marriage, sexual intercourse, superstition and religion, art and custom, as well as the position of women in art and poetry and more. Illustrated with over 200 B&W illustrations, mostly photographic works. Reprint of the original 1920 edition.
