The English poet John Milton created one of the most significant works of European literature in the mid-17th century with his epic poem "Paradise Lost." Written in blank verse, which was atypical for the time, it tells the story of Satan's repeated attempts to wrest power from God. When Satan, in the form of a serpent, infiltrates Paradise and provokes the fall of Adam and Eve, the Garden of Eden is ultimately lost. Milton's masterful composition of "Paradise Lost" remained a guiding light for English literature for a long time.
