The famous astrophysicist Hubert Reeves explains the formation of our universe in this volume. The detailed illustrations make this "creation" understandable to us. In the formation of the universe, the most fundamental elementary particles, quarks and electrons, came together to form atoms, just as letters or sounds combine to create a word. Thus, randomness suddenly gains articulated meaning. Atoms, in turn, combine to form molecules like words form sentences, and molecules further combine into giant molecules like the DNA of living cells, cells into organisms, and so on. We learn why this emergence of new entities through the creative organization of the existing is referred to as emergence in philosophy. Reeves sees this at work everywhere, in the cosmos as well as in the creative activities of humans.
