At the edge of a small town, at the very end of the last street, stands a creepy house. No one knows anything about the resident, Mr. Pasternak, who is nothing more than a shadow behind tattered curtains. Right across the street lives a little girl named Anabel. It would never have occurred to her to knock on the door of this eerie house. But when her cat crawls through the basement window and then her little brother follows, she has no choice but to rescue them before they end up in a cooking pot. Rosemarie Eichinger tells the story of Anabel, Mr. Pasternak, and the creepy house with great verve, behind whose facade lies a world that neither Anabel nor the readers could have ever imagined. And cheese rolls in a jar and a cookie bush are not even the strangest things. Fortunately for all of us, Thomas Kriebaum has captured some of these oddities with a lively stroke, especially for those who might not otherwise believe it.
