Theology alone is not sufficient to understand interpersonal dynamics in religious practice. It also requires dialogue with social psychology and psychoanalysis, as well as professional training and continuing education pathways. This was the insight that led to the founding of the German Society for Pastoral Psychology (DGfP) in 1972, the professional association for pastoral care, counseling, and supervision in Germany. In Marburg, depth-psychologically based pastoral psychology has a long tradition. The present volume is based on a conference that took place in 2022, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the umbrella organization and the 70th birthday of Ulrike Wagner-Rau, exploring the unconscious in an interdisciplinary manner and conveying it as a vital construct to the next generation.
