Study paper from 2020 in the field of Economics - Environmental Economics, grade: 1.1, European Distance Learning University Hamburg, language: German.
Abstract: Whether it is about the climate agreement, the EU plastic ban, the diesel scandal, or overfishing of the seas, these are just a few examples of the current environmental issues that have long been part of discussions in environmental policy. Using the example of overfishing, this scientific paper describes the role of environmental economics, a branch of economics, which deals specifically with these topics. This paper presents the conflict between (economic) theory and environmental issues. Game theory from economics can be utilized at various points to help address this topic. Game theory examines the decision-making processes of the involved parties, from which strategies can be derived. The associated prisoner's dilemma, as a part of game theory, is examined in detail in this paper and additionally analyzed using the described application example from the environmental issue.
Overfishing of the seas is just one of many environmental problems. What was unimaginable a few decades ago is now a reality: industrial fishing is increasingly spreading across all oceans due to technological advancements. As a result, the population of many marine species has significantly declined. This fact will have fatal consequences for the environment and the seas if nothing changes.
