Das Überseeische Deutschland - Die deutschen Kolonien in Wort und Bild. Illustrated with over 200 b/w illustrations and plates. The German colonies and protectorates were acquired by the German Empire at the end of the 19th century and abandoned after World War I in accordance with the Treaty of Versailles of 1919. In 1914, the so-called "German protectorates" were the fourth largest colonial empire in terms of area after the British, French and Russian empires. The colonies included German South-West Africa, German West Africa, German East Africa, German Somali Coast, German New Guinea, German Samoa Islands. According to Article 1 of the Constitution of the German Reich, they were not part of the territory of the Reich, but overseas possessions of the German Reich. Since 1899 all "protectorates", with the exception of the Marshall Islands (since 1906 also these), were under as colonies.
